In front of 7,000+ in Surprise, Arizona, the Royals went to battle with the defending AL Champion and complex partner Texas Rangers.

The matchup pitted Luis Mendoza vs. Colby Lewis. KC got off to a hot start with a one-out double by Giavotella. Gio came around to score on a two-out, two-run shot to left-center by Butler. The Blue Crew didn’t look back after that.

The Royals put up four runs in the top of the fifth, while Texas rebounded in the bottom of the frame due to a Mitch Moreland solo shot.

Luis Mendoza got the W, going 2 innings with 1 K, 1BB, while giving up 1 hit. Vin Mazzaro, Sean O’Sullivan, and Nate Adcock all threw 2 innings as well, while Kelvin Herrera pitched in the 9th, closing out the 6-1 victory.

All in all, it was a great way to start the Spring, shutting down one of the most powerful lineups in the league. The pitching was solid and the offense gave the necessary cushion for the pitchers to take the mound with confidence.
